Effective Primary Subject Leadership
Lead your subject with greater confidence, clarity and impact
Leading a subject across a primary school brings a different set of challenges to leading learning in your own classroom. You need to shape a clear vision, develop and evaluate the curriculum, support colleagues and understand what effective practice looks like across the school.
And for many teachers, subject leadership is their first opportunity to lead beyond their own classroom.

Effective Primary Subject Leadership is a six-month online programme designed to give primary subject leaders the knowledge, practical tools and confidence to lead their subject effectively.
Across five online modules, you will explore the key responsibilities of subject leadership – from developing your vision and curriculum to strengthening teaching and learning and evaluating impact.
Throughout the programme, you will have opportunities to:
- apply practical approaches directly to your own subject and school
- reflect on your current practice and identify priorities for development
- build confidence in supporting and influencing colleagues
- develop a clearer understanding of effective curriculum leadership
- connect with subject leaders from other primary schools and learn from their experiences
By the end of the programme, you will be better equipped to move beyond simply managing your subject and lead it with purpose, strengthening practice across your school and supporting better outcomes for pupils.
Why join the programme?
Effective subject leadership is about more than overseeing a curriculum. It means having a clear vision for your subject, supporting colleagues to strengthen classroom practice and knowing how to evaluate what is working and where improvement is needed.
This programme will help you develop the confidence and practical skills to do that effectively.
Across five modules, you will work through the key aspects of subject leadership, from vision and curriculum planning to teaching and learning and quality assurance, with practical approaches you can apply in your school.
By taking part, you will:
- Build confidence in leading your subject and influencing practice across your school.
- Develop a clear vision and direction for your subject.
- Strengthen your approach to curriculum planning, delivery and quality assurance.
- Gain practical tools and approaches you can apply directly in your role.
- Make time to reflect on current practice and identify priorities for improvement.
- Connect with other primary subject leaders to share experiences, ideas and approaches.
