SSAT Statement following the death of headteacher Ruth Perry

By SSAT

We would like to offer our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Ruth Perry.

We support the teaching unions in calling for a temporary suspension of Ofsted inspections – both as a mark of respect for Ruth Perry, her family and colleagues, and to allow time for a full enquiry to be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the inspection at Caversham Primary School.

Over recent years, most schools have stopped grading lessons as part of their quality assurance processes. Research has consistently shown that awarding a grade does not support ongoing improvement. We know that use of a grade descriptor stifles productive conversation and development – whatever additional feedback is given, it is difficult to see beyond the given grade.

We believe that the same principle applies when it comes to schools. To reduce the work of a school – and the careers of school leaders to a grade does little to support development. Rather than supporting those who choose to take on these challenging and vitally important roles graded inspections cause intolerable stress and anxiety. Whilst, as a profession, we recognise the importance of accountability and continuous improvement, we believe that there needs to be a new approach – one that promotes collaboration and support over fear and shame.

Adaptive teaching – what are we adapting to, and why?

It seems that everyone is talking about adaptive teaching at the moment. With inclusion at the heart of the new Ofsted framework and the emphasis on ‘inclusive mainstream’, it is not surprising that there is a lot of discussion about how we might meet the varying needs of learners. However, does adaptive teaching offer fresh insights into this challenge or a repositioning of previous thinking?
