WATCH: Leading teacher assessment and ranking with Tom Middlehurst, Dylan Wiliam and Chris Baker

In this policy update, hosted by Tom Middlehurst, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at SSAT, we take a closer look at how heads, principals, SLT and curriculum leaders might go about the process of teacher assessment and ranking exercises during May, ahead of the submission opening on 1 June. Tom is joined by Dylan Wiliam, author of our highly regarded Embedding Formative Assessment programme, and former teacher turned football-scout Chris Baker, whose blog many SSAT members have found helpful.

Unfortunately, there was a technical issue with the introductory section of the webinar where Tom outlined the assessment and ranking process and the principles behind it – however, an in-depth analysis is available to read.

Perhaps the comments about school’s role being to get students to the course they want rather than exam results could filter to Ofsted. Sadly much as we’d like to be about or students progress Ofsted look at the raw data – % of level 4 etc and VA scores

With inclusion at the heart of the new Ofsted framework and the emphasis on ‘inclusive mainstream’, it is not surprising that there is a lot of discussion about how we might meet the varying needs of learners. However, does adaptive teaching offer fresh insights into this challenge or a repositioning of previous thinking?
