A tribute to Dave Baker

There will rightly many tributes to Dave Baker. He was much loved and admired, he brought people together in a way few can do. His height and colourful bow ties meant he stood out in a crowd, and reflected his stature among those who knew him, his warmth and sense of fun.

I had the great privilege of knowing Dave and working with him for fifteen years in my time at SSAT. He was one of the first headteachers I met. He had started his headship at Bradley Stoke Community School and was contributing to leadership programmes, sharing his experience and wisdom with other leaders across the country. He always did this humbly, and generously. He went on to become founding CEO of Olympus Academy Trust and one of most respected multi-academy trust leaders I know. In the South West, he was at the heart of collaboration – building relationships and networks, working for the good of all children and young people whichever school they attended.

Dave would often remind me that his journey into executive headship began while we were sat together at an SSAT Executive Headteacher event. His mobile phone rang, a local school needed help and he was ready to answer. Dave was always ready to answer the call. He did this many times, and as the Olympus Academy Trust grew so did his influence across the education system. He knew everyone and gave his time bigheartedly. He lived out his Christian faith as a school leader, making a difference in the world.

He very kindly hosted and contributed to many SSAT leadership programmes over the years. In the early days, he was cohort leader for the Developing Leaders programme – inspiring the next generation of school leaders. Later, he would host two-day Executive Headteacher events. Typically these would include a networking meal. Dave enjoyed a curry and being with people. He was interested in others and always made you feel welcome.

Dave loved his family, enjoyed life and laughed easily. He had incredible energy and was passionate about sports – basketball, swimming and supporting Bristol City.

He will be missed greatly.
