A growing subfield of the student voice literature focuses on the organisational mechanisms and processes that enable students to be meaningfully involved in school decisions via inclusive government structures and action research projects on school issues.
Lyons et al, 2020

SSAT’s School Recognition Scheme draws on a rich evidence base pointing to the importance of adult and school support in the development of student leadership potential. Our scheme focuses on the six strands of student leadership for impact outlined in the infographic below.

Rooted in evidence about how student leadership develops over time, there are four levels of award:

  • Bronze Award: Recognising how schools help students lead themselves.
  • Silver Award: Recognising how schools help students lead with others.
  • Gold Award: Recognising how schools help students lead for their school.
  • Platinum Award: Recognising how schools help students prepare for adult leadership.

As well as considering the impact of student leaders in your setting, our scheme will help you evaluate support systems that underpin the development of effective student leadership:

  • Strategic intent and key principles of student leadership
  • Resourcing and ways of working for student leaders
  • Communication with staff and stakeholders by student leaders
  • Culture and access, and measuring impact, as student leaders

Schools taking part in SSAT’s School Recognition Scheme to evaluate the impact of their work with student leaders will benefit in the following ways:

  • Recognition for an inclusive approach to enhancing student belonging and contribution
  • A structured approach to the evaluation of a complex area of school provision
  • Expert and evidence-informed feedback about strengths and areas for development
  • Clarity about next steps for embedding student leadership throughout the school

Free to member schools, and competitively priced for non-members, SSAT’s School Recognition Scheme is the perfect way to capture the intent, implementation and impact of your work in developing students as leaders.
