Are you a senior leader considering headship? Do you want to understand more about the role and be better prepared for future applications and interviews?

The SSAT Aspirant Headteacher programme provides high-quality preparation for headship, equipping school leaders with practical strategies and training for both current and future roles.
Aspiring headteachers will join a national cohort and take part in five online modules. Each module will be hosted by one of the SSAT education team and include inputs from successful headteachers from across SSAT’s national network.

Programme aims:

  • Inspire and support the next generation of headteachers
  • Equip senior leaders with the understanding and competences needed for headship
  • Provide practical training and advice from experienced heads
  • Create a community of learning

How is the programme delivered?

Five modules each delivered as an online seminar.

Module information

Module 1: Leadership through moral purpose

Aims for the session:

  • Reflect on the values and vision that underpin our moral purpose
  • Consider how to build a learning community around shared values and commitments
  • Explore the Leadership through moral purpose strand of SSAT’s Framework for Exceptional Education.
  • Share experiences and practice

Module 2: School culture

Aims for the session:

  • Consider what we understand by school culture and why it is important
  • Reflect upon the culture in our schools
  • Explore contributing factors to the cultural paradigm
  • Reflect on any culture gaps between the current reality and the culture we want to create
  • Share school-based examples

Module 3: Leading school improvement and organisational management

Aims for the session:

  • Clarify understanding of school improvement and organisational management
  • Reflect on successful and less successful experiences of school improvement
  • Explore some frameworks and tools for leading change for improvement
  • Use case studies to consider your approach to school improvement and organisational management challenges

Module 4: Quality assurance and managing performance

Aims for the session:

  • What quality assurance is and what it is not
  • What does quality assurance look like in a school context?
  • What is the role of the headteacher in all that?

Module 5: Governance and accountability

Aims for the session:

  • Sharing our experience of working with governors
  • Governors – what are they for?
  • Accountability – to whom and for what?
