Finding out what students now know – subject focused online seminar series

“If I had to reduce all of educational psychology to just one principle, I would say this: The most important single factor influencing learning is what the learner already knows. Ascertain this and teach him (or her) accordingly.”
Ausubel, 1968 p. vi

There are two certainties in teaching:

  • We don’t know what they already know
  • They won’t learn what we teach them

The transition back to school means that these two facts will be of greater importance than ever.
